 Clinical Excellence

News Update: (Feb. 14, 2012) DaVita® recently announced its 2011 End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Quality Incentive Program (QIP) results from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). DaVita outperformed the industry with 75 percent of the company’s clinics ranking in the top clinical performance tier, versus 71 percent for the rest of the industry. Patient care at DaVita® begins with consistent and positive clinical outcomes that improve our patients' quality of life. Below are some of our most recent data points from both our inpatient and outpatient services:

  • DaVita, in collaboration with our physician partners, has achieved clinical outcomes that are the best or among the best in virtually every category, based on 2007-2009 data.
  • DaVita leads large dialysis organizations in fistula placement.
  • DaVita has the best influenza and pneumococcal vaccination rates in the industry.
  • In 2009, DaVita led large dialysis organizations in day-90 catheter rates.
  • DaVita RxSM, DaVita's renal pharmacy, reduces the potential for adverse drug interactions and improves patient adherence to prescriptions, lowering the risk of hospitalization by up to 30 percent.
  • Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are in a VillageHealth® integrated care program generally experience slower progression to dialysis, more outpatient than in-hospital dialysis starts, and a higher likelihood of having a fistula in place on the first day of dialysis.

The DaVita Quality Index (DQI), a proprietary benchmarking tool that ranks individual facilities’ clinical performance against companywide results, has shown 10 consecutive years of improvement. DQI provides a single, weighted, composite score that reflects performance on a range of patient outcomes. When DQI improves, it generally translates into longer life, reduced infection rates and avoided hospitalizations for our patients.

The Acute Clinical Outcomes Index (ACOI) is a proprietary benchmarking and quality-assurance tool that allows for the assessment and development of clinical practices. Our goal is to ensure optimal outcomes for our patients while minimizing their length of stay in the hospital, and providing DaVita’s physician partners with data that is pertinent to their acute practice.  In addition, DaVita ACOI works to facilitate a positive relationship with accreditation agencies by:

  • Improving infection control
  • Highlighting our dedication to excellent patient communication among caregivers, hospital partners, nephrologists and discharge planners, as shown through DaVita ACOI data
  • Developing nationally accepted standards for the delivery of patient care
  • Providing the ability to report clinical data to our hospital partners on a monthly basis
  • Presenting ACOI data in a month- over- month format, which allows our hospital partners to trend the performance at their facility
  • Demonstrating the performance of a particular facility in comparison to DaVita as a whole
  • Providing Governing Body minutes that include the ACOI and other pertinent data in a monthly report

DaVita’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) maintains a two-way dialogue with the physicians and clinical caregivers who make these results a reality. Our aim is to improve patients’ length of and quality of life through continuous care innovation.
